While scrolling through your news feed, have you ever come across a sponsored post from some expert or another offering to teach you their secrets? Have you ever wondered if it’s worth your time?
Given the amount of marketing and social media-related browsing I do every day, I see quite a few of these pop up on Facebook. It’s like they know me, or something… In any case, I happened across one just this week that had the potential to be useful and thought, “Why not? I could stand to learn a little more about Instagram , and it’s free. What do I have to lose?”
Obviously I can’t speak for every webinar out there or for every social media influencer selling their strategy—but I sat down to watch this one in hopes of learning something new. And now I’m going to pass that knowledge on to you!
This webinar was hosted by Hilary Rushford of Dean Street Society, a personal stylist and business coach who has over 125,000 followers on Instagram. As you can imagine, her audience engagement is spectacular.
Her Free Instagram Class promised a 5-step lesson on how to grow your Instagram following—then leverage it into increased revenue for your business. As long as you have a product, a service, or a brand to sell, you can apply these strategies and succeed.
She provided a workbook ahead of time, which we could use to follow along and take notes, but she also gave us a link toward the end of the webinar where we could download a completed version in case we missed anything. That was a nice touch, because I can’t begin to describe how quickly this girl speaks! It’s practically inevitable that you’ll miss something.
I’ll go over the lessons only briefly, since she can teach it much more effectively than I ever could. My main purpose here is to A) give you some key takeaways for improving your Instagram following and B) provide a review of her webinar should you decide you want to learn more.
Every individual element of your Instagram should, when taken together, tell a story that entices the viewer and convinces them to become a customer.
All the other webinars I’ve attended have been one hour long, which is what I was expecting when I sat down at 3:00. Imagine my surprise when 4:00 rolled around, and she was still going strong!
She wrapped up a little after 5:00. That’s two full hours for no cost at all, except for your time. And given the amount of information she covered, I’d say that investment was worth it. I will add one caveat—which is that approximately half of the webinar covered the five points above, and the other half promoted her other two (paid) classes. But she also offered a discount for those classes to everyone who was still there, and she is undoubtedly an engaging speaker. She also took breaks every so often to check the comments and answer questions from the audience.
Basically, this free webinar is her “champagne” to entice us in, give us a little bit of what we want, and then tell us how we can learn more—and for how much. Some might find that aggravating, but I think what I did learn was worth the time I spent watching, with the added bonus of seeing how one of her steps to success actually works! I can tell you, that “champagne” did the trick.
Her paid classes may not be right for everyone, but it’s an excellent method of promoting them while also giving potential customers something of value.
If Instagram is one of your major social platforms, I’d recommend giving it a try. You can decide from there whether a monetary investment is right for you. For myself, I decided it was—which makes her pro-tip of offering some “champagne” all the more convincing! I’m looking forward to learning more and implementing these new strategies in the weeks to come. You can see how I’m doing by following the Canopy Instagram at @canopydigital.
